We Give Back
Giving back to the library community is central to LibLime's business model. In addition to developing free software, LibLime has earned its reputation as a friend to libraries.
What have we done for you lately?
The promise of OPEN SOURCE is about more than the nuts and bolts of installation, support
and free code.
It’s about GIVING BACK to the library community in the form of new features, bug fixes and community building. It’s about COMMITMENT to the growth of the open-source product and software communities for all, not just one company.
Here's what we've done for libraries lately:
Koha Project
Koha means GIFT in the Maori language, which is fitting because open source is about GIVING BACK. That's why in addition to GIVING BACK in the form of code and new features, LibLime has also donated countless hours to the support and management of the Koha Project and its community.
We think our record speaks for itself:
- Over 500 libraries successfully migrated to Koha through LibLime
- Tens
of thousands of lines of code GIVEN BACK to the Koha Project-- LibLime
has contributed more code to Koha than any other contributor
- Thousands of emails supporting the community via its free mailing lists
- Weekly updates to the free documentation we created for Koha 3.0 and 3.2
- Daily Release Management activities including Quality Assurance testing, and review and approval of new patches as they were sent to the community
- LibLime staff have also held several official positions in the community historically, including: Release Manager, v. 3.0, 3.2; Translation Manager, v. 3.0; Documentation Manager, v. 3.0 and 3.2
-
In 2009, LibLime developed and launched a new koha.org website on the Plone platform, enabling login-based website collaboration unsupported by previous versions of the website. Over 1000 users have already created accounts and begun contributing Koha news, events, and documentation to the website. The new koha.org even lets users add their library to a Koha Showcase-- a Google map designed for tracking Koha usage around the world!
Koha with Class: Free ILS for LIS Classrooms
LibLime's Koha with Class Initiative is designed to give library students FREE hands-on experience with library automation software and open source.
Building on the success of a pilot program at Texas Woman's University in 2006, Koha with Class provides library school classrooms with up to 5 hosted installations of Koha, the most advanced open-source integrated library automation system, free of charge.
- Hundreds of free installations of Koha have been provided by LibLime via the Koha with Class Initiative and are actively being used by LIS classes around the globe
‡biblios.net: The World's Largest Database of Freely-licensed Library Records
LibLime's latest effort to GIVE BACK is ‡biblios.net, a FREE cataloging service featuring the world's largest database of freely-licensed library records.
‡biblios.net offers a FREE community-built and maintained database of freely-licensed bibliographic records coupled with the ‡biblios cataloging tool created and maintained by LibLime.
‡biblios.net tools allow catalogers to create and share records; they include API support for 'sending' records to other databases, including your ILS. Also included are Social Cataloging features like Forums and Private Messaging.
‡biblios.net is based on ‡biblios, an open-source cataloging tool, freely available from http://biblios.org under the terms of the GPL and developed by LibLime in early 2009.
